What is KIDDO?

KIDDO is a fun, evidence-based program developed by the University of Western Australia to help children aged 2-8 build the skills, confidence, and love for movement that lasts a lifetime. It focuses on developing physical literacy—the fundamental movement skills like running, jumping, throwing, and balancing—that allow kids to enjoy being active and set them up for success in sport, recreation, and everyday play.

At KIDDO Gippsland, we bring this program to life in local communities, working with parents, educators, and coaches to inspire happy, active kids through play-based activities that are engaging, inclusive, and FUN!

What is Physical Literacy?

Physical literacy is about much more than just “being active.” It’s the combination of skills, confidence, and motivation that children need to move their bodies, enjoy being active, and build healthy habits for life.

Think of it like learning to read or write. Just as kids learn the basics of letters, words, and sentences to communicate, physical literacy gives them the building blocks to move and play confidently. It’s learning to run, jump, throw, balance, and more—all the fundamental skills that make physical activity fun, achievable, and lifelong.

Why is Physical Literacy Important?

Physical literacy is critical for a child’s health, development, and wellbeing. When kids develop strong physical skills early on, they are more likely to:

Be confident and happy in their ability to move and play.

Stay active throughout their life, leading to better physical and mental health.

Develop stronger social connections through play, sport, and teamwork.

Build a positive relationship with exercise, seeing it as fun rather than a chore.

Without these foundational skills, children can miss out on opportunities to participate in sport, recreation, and even everyday activities like playing at the park or riding a bike.

How KIDDO Was Developed

KIDDO was created by the University of Western Australia as part of their leading research into physical literacy and early childhood development. Backed by evidence, the program combines:

  • Decades of research on motor skill development.
  • Input from physical education experts, early educators, and child development specialists.
  • A focus on making movement fun, inclusive, and achievable for all children aged 2-8.

KIDDO helps kids develop physical skills while boosting their confidence and motivation to stay active—setting them up for a lifetime of movement and play!

How KIDDO Gippsland Promotes Physical Literacy

At KIDDO Gippsland, we bring physical literacy to life through fun, play-based activities designed for kids aged 2-8. Our sessions help children:

  • Learn fundamental movement skills like running, jumping, and balancing.
  • Build their confidence through games that are engaging and achievable.
  • Discover the joy of movement in a positive and supportive environment.

We also work with parents and educators to share tools, resources, and ideas for encouraging active play at home, at school, and in the community.

The Benefits of Physical Literacy

Building physical literacy early sets kids up for success in:

  • Sport and Recreation: Strong movement skills make it easier to try and enjoy sports and activities.
  • Everyday Play: Kids can confidently run, jump, climb, and play with friends.
  • School Readiness: Physical literacy helps improve focus, learning, and participation.
  • Long-term Health: Active kids are more likely to grow into active, healthy adults.
